Irreversible Damage by Fraudulent Classified Ads

When it comes to seeking a reliable source for something, most people will turn to classified ads. The reason being these are placed categorically and those who know what they are searching for don’t have to scour around all ads to find what they are looking for. The reason for placing classifieds is universal.

It works for all parties involved because this is serious business and these non display ads speak for themselves. What happens when someone takes advantage of this trustworthy system and runs a big scam?

The results are as intended. Unsuspecting readers will be taken in by the scam and by the time they realize it may just be a little late.

There are plenty of fraudulent classified ads placed in leading newspapers and magazines. Most of these fraudulent classified ads are placed in categories of job offers, franchises, money making opportunities, property deals, and trade of automobiles.

These are popular categories and there are many people searching through classifieds in these popular categories. The aim of fraudulent classified ads is to make money off innocent bystanders who take a genuine interest in the rogue advert.

The brains that work behind such fraudulent classified ads are intelligent and most certainly ambiguous. In this online era, it becomes even easier for such operators to gain immediate success.

In fact the situation is such, that after a successful fraudulent classified ads operation, they come back with yet another scam and it’s still impossible for people to get a whiff of the catch. With fraudulent classified ads, their modus operandi is to ensure that people don’t start suspecting right at the onset and at the same time they try to reach out to a majority of people.

For this reason these fraudulent classified ads are placed in the classifieds section because that’s where it’ll be guaranteed maximum viewing. These ads run for long with the intention of ensuring a decent conversion rate.

The reason fraudulent classified ads succeed is because many people respond. In simple calculation, even if they were asking for just a few dollars, and many people responded, they would get away with a whole lot of money.

The truth is, it’s not simple to identify fraudulent classified ads. The only way to steer clear is to ensure that you exercise caution when dealing with offers that sound too good to be true. Exercise your judgment and stay safe. An effective manner in which fraudulent classified ads work is they could choose to use a brand name that’s already famous.

For the unsuspected reader, it’s very difficult to know that they are not dealing with the actual brand but a fake. In regards, to the real brand, there’s times it takes a while for such a matter to come to their notice and even though this is infringement, justice could take years to come and by then the damage done is almost irreversible.

Fraudulent classified ads are a real menace but society is not devoid of them. So next time, you are checking the classifieds don’t believe all your eyes see because even deception is a virtue. One thing’s for sure; no one’s guarantying the classifieds, so do all you can to ensure that you aren’t taken for a ride.

Interracial Dating in Multicultural Society

culture and society

Many things have changed very quickly in the last few decades, amongst them the tolerance of different cultures. It was only 50 years ago when black Americans were purposely segregated and only a hundred years ago when the Chinese head tax was enforced; both legitimizing the separation of people based on ethnicity.

Today such things are not tolerated, and any kind of racism is for the most part frowned upon. But what about dating between the races? While a person may not harbor any outright negative feelings for other ethnicities or cultures, does that mean she/he would be willing to be intimate or hopefully spend the rest of their lives with someone that is not from their own race or culture?

Based on empirical observation the answer seems to be yes, and no. While many of the younger generation seem very willing to give someone of a different ethnicity a try in the dating game, there seems to be a few factors in the way.

Firstly, there is the different cultural background. While many people find this to be a positive, treating is as a learning experience others shy away from it. Many find comfort in similar backgrounds, in situations and customs that they understand, therefore dating someone with different custom maybe a challenge.

Secondly, there is the family acceptance. While the vast majority feels no hesitation in socializing with someone from a different ethnic and cultural background, having their songs/daughters romantically attached to one such person is something different. There are many uncertainties to such a proposition; which religions holidays will be celebrated? How would the kids be raised?

Finally there are certain media stereotypes that may influences the masses. Asian men are seen as geeks or kungfu masters; African American men Gangsters. While our logical minds tell us that they are simply stereotypes, they may still hold influence.

So what’s the conclusion? There is none. Some find the exotic experience a positive, while others find the cultural difference not so appealing. Either way it’s a personal choice to be made by the individual.

South African Culture: an Overview

culture and society
Bare breasted dancing girls, traditional assegais and other weaponry, beaded costumes, these are some of the images that come up when you think of African culture but this isn’t always the case. Go visit in the townships, homesteads or even Afrikaner homes and you will see that South Africa is as diverse in its culture as it is in its scenery.

Is culture only a word that describes how people in a society live or is it something deeper, something that involves how people think, talk, act and work, does it involve their moral and ethical views and in this way their behavior towards other people.

This isn’t a political article that tries to explain why South Africans act the way they do but more of an inquiry into trying to understand why such diversity in thinking, acting and behaving can live together in mostly harmonious conditions.

I am a white South African Writer with an Afrikaner background who was bought up during and after the apartheid days. When I was younger I went to a school where the soccer field had a line down the middle with the black children allowed to play on the one side of the field and the white children on the other and god help us if we tried to commingle. Then one year we came to school and the line was gone, there were no more physical boundaries to separate skin colour and the only boundaries were those of the mental kind but we slowly started to commingle and play together but still did not go to the point of visiting each other at the other ones houses. After School I went and lived overseas for 2 years. The same attitude exhisted when I left but after just 2 years I came home and imagine my delight when I saw black, white and coloured living in the same neighbourhoods being good friends, visiting each others homes and so forth. I asked myself what happened, how this wonderful thing came about and the best answer I could come up with was that people had learned to accept and respect each others culture and by dropping this boundary had started to live together harmoniously. Now some of my best friends are black and I’ve seen that everybody has similar problems and everybody helps each other out in similar ways.

Now although a nice story this doesn’t quite explain what South African culture is, or does it? It highlights the fact that South African white, black and coloured cultures have started to mix and become a culture that is uniquely it’s own, a South African culture. Yes we all have our own idiosyncrasies and ways of living but we live together, experiencing those living styles and idiosyncrasies together and being a truly rainbow nation.

How to Avoid Scam Work at Home Opportunities

Whenever looking for at home employment one of the most important things to look out for is work at home scams. These opportunities come in many forms and are evolving every day into more clever and deceptive scams.

These companies feed on your desperations to find real work and try to get you to make decisions with your emotions and not with your brain. When you start seeing the flashing dollar signs and fancy houses and cars on their advertisements it’s easy to shell out some cash in hopes of succeeding.

Here are a few things that can help you spot a work at home scam before they take your money and leave you with nothing. The first thing you want to be aware of, are super exaggerated claims, like you can make 3 thousand dollars a day working fifteen minutes at your computer.

Often they will try to provide evidence that this is possible by posting screen shots of their online accounts. You cannot believe this as this proof is one of two things, either completely falsified, or it is real but depicts the owner’s income from selling his scam program and not the amount that you would generate by following their program.

The next piece of advice is to read all the small print and terms of conditions for any work at home opportunity. Many times you can find hidden charges or explanations of what the culprit is really selling in place of real home work. No matter how legitimate the website may seem it is crucial to read these very carefully and thoroughly.

Moreover, while reading the fine print check out their privacy information as well. This will let you know what the company plans on doing with your information once they get it. Often times they will say things like we reserve the right to share your contact information with our partners. If so never deal with these companies.

One of the simplest ways to spot a scam is by the amount of contact information they reveal. If it’s just a name and email address you should be cautious. Sometimes even if a company is displaying a full address you might want to check it out as well, often times they place fake addresses which have nothing to do with the real location of the website owner.

Finally if you’re still not sure about the legitimacy of a website or work at home opportunity the best thing to do is research it online. There are plenty of watchdog sites that keep large databases of scam companies. You can find ongoing discussions about what these companies are really selling and quickly find out which ones to avoid.

If you follow these simple steps along with some common sense you can avoid being scammed while looking for at home work. You also want to be realistic about your prospects finding your dream job, the reason that so many work at home scams exist is because legitimate work is very elusive and hard to find.

Earthern Pot Culture Method to Check the Stability of Marine Azotobacter Sp in the Soil by Assessing the Growth of Green Gram

culture and society
INTRODUCTION

Nitrogen is a fundamentally important element in biologically mediated production and nutrient cycling processes. N2 containing constituents of organic molecules often confer bioactivity to these molecules. Major cellular, structural, and functional constituents have essential and often highly specific requirements for N2.Nitrogen fixation is the reduction of N2 (atmospheric nitrogen) to NH3 (ammonia). Free living prokaryotes with the ability to fix atmospheric dinitrogen (diazotrophs) are ubiquitous in soil. But our knowledge of their ecological importance and their diversity remains incomplete. In natural ecosystems, biological N2 fixation is most important source of N. The capacity for nitrogen fixation is widespread among bacteria and archaea. The estimated contribution of free-living N-fixing prokaryotes to the N input of soil ranges from 0-60 kg/ha /year (Burgmann et al., 2003). Dinitrogen (N2)-fixing microorganisms (diazotrophs) play important roles in ocean biogeochemistry and plankton productivity (Church et al., 2005). Nitrogenase catalyzes the reduction of nitrogen gas to ammonium in an ATP-and reductant dependent reaction. It is one of the best characterized metalloenzyme and is an excellent model for elucidating metalloprotein assembly. Nitrogenase is composed of two oxygen-labile metallo protein; dinitrogenase and dinitrogenase reductase

Nitrogen fixation can be an important source of nitrogen for biological productivity in the marine environment. Biological nitrogen fixation is catalyzed by the enzyme nitrogenase, which is possessed by diverse microorganisms representing virtually all phylogenetic groups. Interest in nitrogen fixation in the sea has usually been focused on rates of nitrogen fixation, but information on the types of species present with the capability for nitrogen fixation can be important for predicting nitrogen fixation rates in situ (Zehr et al., 1998).Understanding how fixed N regulates nitrogenase availability is necessary for devising strategies to increase the amount of ammonium synthesized by nitrogen fixing bacteria with the potential to be used in agriculture (Kennedy et al., 2004).

Azotobacter is used as a biofertilizer in the cultivation of most crops. Azotobacter is an obligate aerobic diazotrophic soil-dwelling organism with a wide variety of metabolic capabilities, which include the ability to fix atmospheric nitrogen by converting it to ammonia. Azotobacter naturally, fixes atmospheric nitrogen in the rhizosphere. There are different strains of Azotobacter each has varied chemical, biological and other characters. However, some strains have higher nitrogen fixing ability than others (Burgmann et al., 2003). Besides, nitrogen fixation, Azotobacter also produces, Thiamin, Riboflavin, indol acetic acid and gibberellins.

There is firm evidence that indole -3-acetic acid ,gibberellins (Brown, et al 1976) , and cytokinins all produced by plants and essential to their growth and development, are produced also by various bacteria which live in association with plants. There is also evidence that the growth hormones produced by the bacteria can in some instances increase growth rates and improve yields of the host plants (Brown et al., 1976). When Azotobacter is applied to seeds, seed germination is improved to a considerable extent, so also it controls plant diseases due to above substances produced by Azotobacter (Kader et al., 2002.)

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Sample collection

Samples were collected in different locations of Rameshwaram marine region at the depth of 1–5 m. The randomly collected samples in the sterile plastic bags (soil sample) and water sampling bottles (water sample) bottles were kept in an ice-cold box and transported safely to the lab for further analysis with in 12 hrs. The sample with media tubes were packed and transported safely to the laboratory.

Isolation of Azotobacter from water and sediment samples (Mary et al., 1985)

Different selective media were used for the isolation of Azotobacter sp from marine source as described previously. Azotobacter strains used for this study were maintained and cultured in Burk medium as previously described (Joerger et al., 1988). As the isolates are of marine origin, the media were prepared by the 3.5% sodium chloride (NaCl). Media used for the isolation of nitrogen fixing organism (Azotobacter) from marine sources were Jensen’s agar medium, Azotobacter agar medium, Burk’s Medium and marine agar medium. Followed by Gram staining, catalase test, starch hydrolysis test were also carried out. (Bagwell et al., 1988)

Pot culture method

The broth containing active culture of Azotobacter sp was selected. Three marine strains, three soil strains, three standard Azotobacter sp procured from MTCC, (Chandigarh, India were used. Forty healthy seeds of green gram were mixed with 3ml of Azotobacter inoculum and 3ml of cooled rice porridge. The seeds were dried and sown in each pot. The control is devoid of the inoculum. The pots were watered regularly, at an interval of 5 days the length of the root and shoot were observed and recorded. After 15 days interval leaves were collected for estimating the chlorophyll content by spectrophotometric method. Spectrophotometric analysis of chlorophyll pigments were developed in the 1930’s and 1940’s (Weber et al, 1986). Chlorophyll is extracted in 80% acetone and the absorption at 663nm and 645nm are read in a spectrophotometer.

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

Totally 50 samples were collected in marine region of both water and sediments in the intervals of approximately 20 days .Out of 35 marine water samples collected, all the 35 samples were showing the presence of Azotobacter, but only 13 marine sediments out of 15 were showing the presence of Azotobacter. These samples were processed through the commonly used procedures such as selective media, Gram’s staining, and Phase contrast observation for motility, starch hydrolysis test and Catalase test for identification of free- living diazotrophic organism i.e Azotobacter from the above samples, and that can be processed. The colony morphology of Azotobacter strains were varying during the isolation in the selective media. The colonies were very clear, large, mucoid, watery due drops like initially i.e. from the marine source. Other testes show that Azotobacter sp is gram negative, motile, catalases and starch hydrolysis positive. All the isolated Azotobacter strains were numbered for the easy identification and convenience.

Result of pot culture experiment

The main objective of the pot culture study is to examine the influence of Azotobacter on green gram, 5 days interval after sowing various characteristics of growth such as percentage of germination, shoot and root length was measured results were noted % of germination range from 78 to 93 and for root and shoot length values range from 7 to 15 cms. 3 marine strains (400,408,409),3 soil strains,(1,2,6) and 3 standard strains (2452,2632,2633)were used for the experiment. Approximately (10 × 107 CFU/pot) broth inoculum was introduced in all the 18 pot (original and duplicate) except the control pot.

Significant differences were observed. The plants inoculated with Azotobacter sp were taller than that of control pot. Marine Strain 400 and soil strain 6 shows remarkable effect on the shoot length of plant and Marine Strain 408 and soil strain 1 shows remarkable effect on the root length of the plant than others on 15th day. The plant leaf was analysized to check the differences in chlorophyll content. Significant difference was observed results were .The OD value shows at 645 nm ranges from 0.028 to 0. 058 and OD value at 663 nm ranges from 0.090 to 0.109

Azotobacter is a heterotroph bacterium of aerobic character having the capability of fixation of dinitrogen as nonsymbiont. However; some strains have higher nitrogen fixing ability than others (Burgmann et al., 2003). Besides, nitrogen fixation, Azotobacter also produces, Thiamin, Riboflavin, indole acetic acid and gibberellins. When Azotobacter is applied to seeds, seed germination is improved to a considerable extent, so also it controls plant diseases due to above substances produced by Azotobacter (Kader et al., 2002.)

Ayurveda and Culture

culture and society
India’s culture is greatly influenced by the lifestyle as prescribed by Ayurveda. For a long time, people of India (Kerala) used to wake up early in the morning, do Surya Namaskar (sun worship), temple visits, take healthy meals, slept well, and lived healthy. Each of these activities have health effects to mind, body and soul. For example Surya Namaskar and meditation that are performed before the sunrise prepare one to face the challenges of the day.

The dinacharya (daily routine) prescribed by Ayurveda (and Yoga) put emphasis on health of mind, body and soul.

“Samadosha samagnischa samadhatu malakriya Prasanna atma manah swastha itih abhidhiyate” is a Sanskrit slogan which describes that health is “having a balances state of tridoshas (three humors), agni (fire – the digestive power), dhatus (tissues), mala (biological waste products), cheerful state of atma (soul) and peaceful functioning of sensory organs and mind.”

To maintain this state –healthy body, healthy mind and healthy soul – one needs to observe dinacharyas (daily routines), which changes with ritus (seasons), ritucharyas (routines for the season).

For the healthy mental being, one needs to take a job that is appropriate for his/her talents and skills. Maintaining good human relationships within family and society is also another aspect of healthy well being.

According to Ayurveda, nothing in this universe is without a cause. The sunlight, breeze, the sound from rivers, clouds, smell of flowers – all have medicinal value or curing capacity. If not treating body aberrations, it will address mental conditions and fulfilling the need of soul. Thus the culture of India can be said to be evolved around Ayurvedic principles. If the general habits and behavior of a person and the society in general determines the culture of the land, dinacharyas and ritucharyas determine the culture of India, which is to find value in every seemingly insignificant element.

Thus, Ayurveda is not just a method of treatment. It is also about philosophy, psychology and theology.

Pearl Culturing Saving the Enviroment

culture and society
Recent studies have proven what pearl culturing enthusiasts have known for years - pearl culturing is good for the environment. Pearl oysters clean the water, remove nitrogen and accelerate the process of de-nitrification. They enhance water clarity, promote sea grass survival and provide excellent habitat for myriads of juvenile fish and crustaceans.

Pearl oysters belong to a group of organisms known to biologists as filter feeders or suspension feeders. They take in water, filter out their nourishment, and expel what they don’t need. Oyster waste becomes another aquatic animals’ food.

Pearl oysters lower bacterial counts and algal blooms. They filter silt from the water, lowering turbidity and allowing better light penetration. This helps oxygenate deeper water and improves eelgrass survival.

Pearl culturing involves no fertilizers, feeds, herbicides, drugs, chemicals, or antibiotics. Pearl oysters directly and indirectly remove nitrogen and other nutrients from water. These highly efficient water purifiers remove organic matter, nutrients, silt, bacteria and viruses, and improve clarity and light transmission. This in turn improves the condition of critical habitat, including survival of species such as sea grasses and other submerged vegetation.

The structures used in pearl culturing (racks, cages, nets, ropes, trays and lines) act like reefs and provide habitat and protection for a myriad of other organisms, frequently serving as nursery grounds for fish and other shellfish, such as juvenile lobsters. They provide protection from predators for juvenile fish and crustaceans, increased surface area for fouling, and an increased food supply for other organisms.

Pearl culturing improves species abundance and diversity. Pearl oyster shells and provide habitat for juvenile fish, crabs and other organisms. It comes as no surprise that pearl culturing has received a thumbs-up from environmental groups such as Environmental Defense, Audubon Society, Eco-fish, and various others.

Good quality pearls can grow only inside healthy oysters. In order to be healthy, the oysters must be grown in clean waters. Pollution in the water can weaken oysters and kill them, inhibit the secretion of a good coating of nacre (mother of pearl), as well as introduce pollutants into a pearl that inhibit the appearance of orient. Moreover, providing the pearl generating organisms with a good living environment enables the pearls to be formed in shorter terms. Therefore, pearl farmers make every effort to maintain good environmental conditions around the area. Armed with the knowledge of how pollution can destroy growing areas, pearl farmers become first in the line of defense in enacting laws and protecting and restoring water quality to keep their industry alive.

Avoiding Online Business Fraud

When you are looking for a way to make money online, you should make sure you have your fraud detectors on full alert when you read through any proposals being presented. In most instances, it should be pretty easy to figure out if someone is trying to rip you off. Just remember the old advice that if it sounds to good to be true, it probably is. So when those unsolicited offers drop into your email promising exorbitant amounts of income for only a few hours work a week, chances are it is a scam just to separate you from your money.

Some of the red flags to watch for are the type of proposal being made. Offers that say you have nothing to do to start earning big money immediately, will come with a cost. You will have to pay for someone else to set up your business and heck, all you have to do is keep sending in the monthly fees and you can earn money off all income received from your website. They forgot to mention that if you do not advertise your site no one will know about it and you can not make any money if you have no sales.

Look for contact information before clicking on any links that take you from the main page. If the online business offers you a phone number and a name, do not hesitate to call and ask for that person. While it could be single line into someones basement, at least it has a contact information. However, if the call is answered in an unprofessional manner you may be better off apologizing for calling a wrong number and hanging up. Some legitimate businesses do work from their homes, after all that is what you are hoping to do, and if a child answers do not ask for mom or dad, ask for the name on the website.

Look at the testimonials that are bound to be included on any website offering a chance to make a lot of money. They are usually tucked in between the pictures of a mansion and a new car or two, supposedly of the person that sent you the email. Just remember, you can take your digital camera on a road trip to an upper class neighborhood and take pictures of cars and houses. Be skeptical about investing in an online business opportunity and do some research.

Run the business name through a couple of search engines. Chances are, if it is not a legitimate offer, there will be a few pages that show up of complaints from others that lost money investing in a scam. The company may claim the complaints are from disgruntled people who were too lazy to spend even a few hours a week working in the business, but a reasonably intelligent person can read through several complaints and see a pattern develop. By using due diligence in your research of companies offering business opportunities you can limit the opportunities of someone else of getting their hand on your wallet.

Fashion - a Cross Cultural Perspective

culture and society
When talking about fashion, clothing designers such as Hugo Boss, Christian Dior and Yves Saint Laurent may come to mind. Yet fashion is more complex then the threads these designers weave; it is a custom or style of dress intertwined with society, its norms and culture.

For example, in several tribal communities in Southern Africa men go completely naked except for a string around the waist. Women usually were traditional tribal clothing, but sometimes go topless, especially in the hot summer months. This type of dress attire is taboo in most western countries, yet perfectly normal and appropriate for tribal society. If we were to invite a few members of an African tribal community to visit the United States, they would need to conform to the country’s dress code in order to fit in. If, however our interlopers chose to ignore U.S. dress norms and walked around the streets of New York wearing only tribal attire, they would probably be arrested, or sent to Bell View for Psychiatric evaluation. Thus, what is normal dress in one country is considered bazaar, illegal, or even psychotic in another.

Take George for example, he’s an average guy with a good build, however heads turn when he shops at a local Sears store wearing a woman’s dress. If we ask George’s friends to describe him, they say he’s a good guy, but odd because he likes wearing women’s clothing. When George proceeds to purchase a blouse at Sears the sales girl looks awkward ringing him up. After he exits the department the sales girl turns to a co-worker and starts to laugh. When people violate dress norms they could find themselves mocked, isolated or even ostracized form society.

If we could turn the clock back a few minuets and transport George to a parallel universe in which women dress like men, and men dress like women then George would fit in perfectly. As he shops at Sears nobody blinks an eye. George’s friends now describe him as a great guy and a good dresser. Even the sales girl smiles as she rings him up. After he leaves the department the girl still turns to a co-worker and starts to laugh, not because George is wearing a dress, but because she’s made a date with him for dinner and a movie that night. Ironically in both universes George’s personality and dress attire is identical, yet peoples attitudes and perception towards him has changed, due to the difference in cultural settings.

Finally meet Pam, as she’s out shopping on a freezing winter night wearing a T-shirt and shorts, people think she’s crazy. Although Pam’s attire is normal for a hot summer day, it looks odd when worn in the dead of winter. Six months latter in June, when Pam shows up at wedding wearing a tank top and shorts, people conclude she’s insane. Of course Pam’s dress attire is perfect for summer, but inappropriate for a wedding. Thus, what is normal dress code for a culture can be considered abnormal if worn during the wrong session or social context.

As long as people wear clothing, fashion will always be intertwined with society, its norms and culture. As a result, the next time you purchase an article of clothing at your local mall or on-line, will it truly be your decision or will you be influenced by the culture around you?

The Best Identity Theft Protection

The best identity theft protection can be hard to find and incorporate into your daily habits. Identity theft is becoming a crime of choice these days because it is so easy to get away with. It is approximated that over 7 million individuals fell victim to identity theft last year and this year is supposed to reach close to 10 million. Scary huh?

The good think is, you have a few options when it comes to protecting yourself from becoming an identity theft victim. Most of the thing that can, and will protect you, have to be done by you all the time. There are also services you can purchase that do a lot of the work of protecting your identity for you. No matter what, to get the best identity theft protection, you need to do some things yourself.

Here are a few things you can and need to start doing today.

You need to watch your mail like a hawk. Mail is one of the easiest ways for a thief to get a hold of your personal information. All they need to do is get a bank statement, medical bill, credit card bill, or others and your identity is toast. They can also steal other things out of your mail like money and items purchased over the internet or phone and are mailed to you.

Have you ever shredded your personal documents that you don’t want to keep around the house? How about those pesky credit card offers that you get in the mail every day? If you are already in the habit of tossing those in the mail, you are giving a dumpster diver the perfect opportunity to find and steal a new identity for him or herself. Go out today and buy a good shredder, not just a regular shredder, but a cross cut shredder that can shred up to 6 pages at a time. Shred everything! Even stuff that doesn’t need to be shredded. Better safe that sorry!

Be aware of shady store employees when paying by debit or credit card. You should never let your credit card be out of your sight. This has mostly been a problem in the restaurant industry when the individual serving you takes your card away to run it. How easy would it be for them to quickly write down your credit card information and start stealing money from you?

Never, never, ever give your personal information out over the phone, this is called phishing. This happens when someone calls posing as someone from your bank or credit card company asking you to verify your social security number. Don’t do it! They already have it and would never ask for that over the phone. Immediately hang up and call that institution and verify that it was not them and report it.

You just need to be aware of everything that is going on around you and in your personal life. You are smart and can protect yourself, but some people get lazy. Remember, the best identity theft protection can be done by you! Work hard to protect everything you have worked so hard to build.

A Highly Advanced Society!

culture and society
When we look around the world today, many societies are vying for who has the best medical program. Is it America, Canada, another? Michael Moore thinks America has one of the worst medical situations. But what about when it comes to space travel? Can anyone top America? China just had their first space walk. But how about all-around technology. Who are the true pioneers?

How about if we go back 10,000 years BCE or so? Wanna journey there for a moment?

Everyone knows that the Wright brothers invented air travel, right? Well, what about the ancient digs in Egypt that turned up fourteen airplanes models, the first discovered in 1898 near an Egyptian tomb close to Sakkara. And of course our drones are the latest rage in warfare; however, even before Plato was born, Greek scientist Arachytas of Tarentum invented a kite that carried a person which the Greek armies used as aerial reconnaissance.

Indian epics such as “Drona parva” discuss in detail technical aspect or “aerial cars” which were in operation  in prehistoric times.

Let’s go from the air to the water- under the water, like in submarines. Ancient historians such as Herodotus, Pliny, and even Aristotle wrote of such underwater ships. What technology did they use for such submersibles? But what about archaeological finds in the past 100 years that indicate medical advances as long ago as 20,000 BCE that allowed for brain surgery, tooth implants, and prosthesis operations? Not only have the surgical tools been unearthed, but so too the medical journals on how to perform such.

Both the Atlantean and Lemurian cultures were greatly advanced. They didn’t use the technology that we do today; however, they built the same machines with different principles.

A major distinction of the Lemurian society was their application of spiritual principles over material advances. We cannot do today what they could 50,000 yars ago such as erecting the 100 ton moai statues that are found on Easter Island, the 105 ton coral gate of Tonga, or the 100 ton basalt logs of Ponape’s Nan Madol in the Western Pacific. Or, how about the astronomically perfect construction of Stonehenge. Myths and ancient writings tell of the Lemurians ability through mind and spirit control to raise such structures by levitation principles. Psychic powers or a deep spiritual connection?

While we take great pride in going to the moon and building the Large Hadron Collider, ancient cultures such as the Mayans knew things about black holes and outer space that we’re just know realizing So, before we get too cocky about our modern day scientific discoveries, we might ask ourselves, how much more was known tens of thousands of years ago and what can we learn from them that might help us a couple of years down the road.

Can you say 2012?  :-)

Creativity and Culture

culture and society
Creativity is not just about having good ideas. Creativity is part of our culture and the most important factor in all human advances to date.

There are many factors that make up a culture ranging from brand names and fashion to movies and technology. Each of these factors is directly influenced by creativity.

Brand names are a great example of our culture that is effected by creativity. Without a lot of creativity, it would be hard to distinguish between the many brands. Brand names strive to be more creative than their competitors so that they get more recognition and ultimately sales. There is a lot of creativity that goes into making a brand what it is. A brands logo is a focal point for brand recognition is based on a creative way to express the brands image. Even the brands image required a creative spark for it to be created.

The fashion world is heavily influenced by creativity. All the followers of the cult that is fashion want to show that they are up with the latest trend. As a new style is created, the cult followers eagerly part with their money in order to be one of the first to embrace a trend.

Movies have a high aspect of creativeness to them. The story lines, dialogue, clothes and props have all been spawned from someone’s creative streak. The creativeness in these movies have a large impact on our culture through our dreams, inspiration and from people comparing situations in movies to their own situations.

Creativity is the corner stone of all human societies and makes us human. It has allows us to take great steps forward and affects every aspect of our culture.

Things You Should Know About Identity Theft

Identify theft is becoming a very real concern for many of us. Initially little could be done after the fact to restore your name and police officers did nothing, because there were no laws in place to protect consumers. Legislators enacted laws to assist consumers to restore their good names and to expedite the investigations by way of the creditor.

This type of crime continues and is increasing and this means more and more people’s credit is at risk. This complicates every day life in that an individual may have trouble obtaining a job, getting phone service, buying a cell phone, renting, buying a car, renting a car and many other everyday transactions. Identity theft complicated things and hurts a consumer’s credit until the mess is cleared up which often can take two years. This could mean higher rates for mortgages and loans and any other type of credit, especially when the consumer does not have a choice and cannot wait a few months or a couple of years. In effect a person may lose his good credit for up to two years. There are many statutes intended to protect consumers, but often these statutes are not enough.

Despite these statutes designed to assist the consumer to restore his or her good name and to expedite resolution, when a person’s identity is stolen the victim is still confronted with a very serious problem. The statutes specify what the consumer needs to do and if the consumer does not follow the rules to the letter, the creditor can continue its efforts to collect on debts not owed by the consumer. One of the worst things about identity theft is that often the debts are too small such that it is not worthwhile to hire an attorney, but at the same time the debt is too big for the consumer to absorb.

Some creditors quickly investigate and are able to determine whether or not the debts where in fact incurred by the consumer or if someone else used the consumers identifying information to obtain credit. Some creditors go the opposite way and exploit the fact that the consumer cannot afford to hire an attorney and fight a smaller debt. These creditors often file a lawsuit relatively quickly and then seek to settle the claim for a fraction and if the consumer does not accept they seek a judgment. These creditors in effect are essentially victimizing the consumer twice.

There is no magic number as to what attorneys charge, but generally speaking attorneys routinely seek retainers of $2,000-$3,000 and when the claim is for $3,000, it makes little economic sense for the consumer to hire an attorney. California and probably many other states have statutes that are designed to turn the tables on the creditor when the creditor fails to investigate incidents of identity theft. In these cases the consumer is required to follow certain steps and request certain things from the creditor. The creditor then has to investigate and respond within 30 days.

If the creditor does not have a good basis to pursue the claim, the creditor most not make any further efforts to collect on a debt. If the creditor decides to pursue the claim and files a lawsuit the consumer can then prove his identifying information was used without authorization and may be able to obtain not only attorney fees, but also an additional award for money damages.

The intent of these identify theft statutes is good, but consumers must still come up with a lot of money to fight these claims and more often than not the claim will not result in any advantage to the consumer. Collection efforts may stop and the lawsuit dropped, but the consumer will still be out of pocket for attorney fees and court costs.

All these protective statutes have a good intent to protect the consumer, but generally speaking they afford little protection when the consumer does not know precisely what the consumer needs to do. Even though each situation is different the first thing a consumer should do is file a police report where the consumer resides. The consumer should then contact the three major collection bureaus and place restrictions on who can access the consumer’s credit or if at all.

The consumer should then contact the creditors directly in writing, preferably by certified return receipt or some sort of proof of delivery. If the creditors refuse to investigate or fail to investigate, or continue collection efforts, then the consumer should consult with an attorney. There is no one perfect way to go about restoring a consumer’s good name, but delay or doing nothing is the worst way to go about it.

E-culture Among University Students

culture and society
SCOPE-ANNAMALAI PSYCHOLOGY JOURNAL, DECEMBER 2006, Vol.2, p:1-7.

INTRODUCTION

Electronic technology is changing our life-style to a great extent. There are many areas of electronic technology helping different sections of a common man. For instance, terms like e-commerce, e-business, e-banking, e-mails, e-organizations, e-governance, e-journals, e-books, e-medicine, internet, web-shopping, etc have become part of the current lexicon. Advances made in the fields of information and communication technology (ICT) and electronics has resulted in the emergence of e-culture. Electronic culture is enveloping the entire world, it is a global phenomenon. Today e-culture is the reality that we live in; it is no longer an option. Kanter (2001) indicates that organization will successfully meet the challenges of the ‘Internet Age’ only if they become communities of collaborative work relations with distinct ‘e-cultures.’

E-culture is also increasingly understood as a new digital media culture or digitalization of culture. Netherlands council for culture in its advisory report on digitalization of culture submitted to the state secretary of education, culture and science (2004) defines e-culture as “all about a new, digital dimension; a new and –until recently- undreamt of medium with which existing culture must seek to interact and in which new culture is being generated.” De Haan and Huysmans (2002) states the term ‘e-culture’ refers to the diffusion of new technology, its application for various purposes (especially information and communication) and shifts in related attitudes, values and norms. Patel and Rajendran (2005) have defined “electronic culture” as “increased use of electronic goods by individuals in various areas”; they have also developed an inventory to measure e-culture. In this research study e-culture was assessed based this perspective.

E-culture is both technological and a social development. There seems to be a widespread consensus that new digital and networking technologies like the World Wide Web (WWW) and the Internet have the capacity to reorder the domains of everyday social and personal life by transforming work and knowledge forms, gender and body politics, health and science, domestic life and entertainment as well as transforming national economics and international relations, democracy and the distribution of power (Dona Kolar-Panov, 2003). The positive approval of the concepts of information society and e-culture are reflected in the keenness with which political decision-makers have taken them over on all levels- local, regional, national and transnational. More accessible and transparent information is an easy expression, something that is unequivocally good. It is good both from the point of view of social resources and democracy. Furthermore, the ideas of an information society and e-culture have also implied or, at least to start with, did imply expectations of economic growth and stability, opening up of new sectors of production, increased productivity and the advent of a new, fluctuation-proof economy (Mitchell, 2003). The emergence of e-culture leads to cultural homogenization and immense concentrations of financial power thereby sending the threatening message “learn English and buy a computer or you’re out” (Marsh, 2003). E-culture also makes it imperative to develop digital skill that is to possess knowledge concerning the handling of electronic products especially the use of computer and Internet (De Haan & Huysmans, 2002).

E-culture in India is not different from the international scenario. India certainly is getting transformed into an e-society. The world’s largest democracy (India) is perhaps one of the most uniquely positioned countries in the world. Although India is a developing country, its wealth of information, resources, and knowledge capacity immediately puts the country on the list of top 5 countries in the world. India is also one of the poorest countries in exposing their content on the global platform using digital media. Except TV, among all other medium India and its information assets are weakly represented. However, the scope of India’s strength in this direction is immense. The government of India as well as many NGOs are dedicated and determined to enrich and enhance the e-status of India. Osama Manzar’s (2005) book “The Best E-contents 2005” published by ‘Digital Empowerment Foundation’ (DEF) is an eye-opener regarding the e-contents in India. The Digital Empowerment Foundation (DEF) has a mission to make India an information-rich country and thereby enrich the world about India’s ancient knowledge, skill and its cultural diversity. DEF understands that because of the content gap, the digital divide exists and therefore its foremost mission is to narrow the content gap using information technology (IT), information and communication technology (ICT) and Internet as means.

Culture and personality are interrelated (see Culture-and-Personality studies. Encyclopedia Britannica. 2006). Psychological processes and cultural norms influence one another (Lehman et al, 2004). Recognizing the importance of culture in shaping personality, Allport (1961) was quick to point out that individuals actively select their own way of life that suits their traits, temperaments, values, and philosophy of life. Since e-culture has evolved as a dynamic new medium of information, entertainment and commerce and demands change in life-style, people exhibiting culture conforming or culture rebellious behaviour and high or low novelty seeking or sensation seeking trait may tend to be influenced by it.

Culture plays an important role in the determination of behaviour and in the development of personality is the basic assumption of the concept of cultural determination (see Chauhan, 1985). Acceptance of culture can be measured through conformity or deviant behaviour.

Sensation seeking, as described by Zuckerman (1994) is a “trait involving the seeking of varied, novel, complex and intense sensations and experiences.” Researches on sensation seeking have accumulated robust evidences for a strong link between sensation seeking and the preference for high arousal, and physical pleasure (Oishi et al, 2001). The personality trait of sensation seeking tend to influence an individual’s adjustment and reaction to socio-cultural changes, in general high sensation seekers in their urge for novel experiences will be more receptive to cultural innovations.

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY

E-culture though popular and prevalent, is a recent phenomenon, studies on it appear remote and negligible both at international and national levels. The scientist community has just begun to recognize the importance of e-culture and its influence. At present there are no much substantial empirical evidences available on the impact of e-culture. Even the ‘concept of e-culture’ currently is tentative and far from conclusive. Researches on e-culture now are only at the beginning of a long process. Reviews indicate that studies on e-culture are fragmented and inadequate. Scanty information is available about the effect of e-culture on social and cultural development. There are no much scientific tools and methods visible to study e-culture. Only recently, the International research community has started showing interest in exploring e-culture. In India, unfortunately, the research efforts in understanding the status of e-culture have still not gained momentum. The research and academic community are dormant regarding the influence of e-culture. An examination of related literature in Indian context indicates that e-culture has received poor attention. Hence this investigation is an attempt made to understand the relationship between e-culture and the psychological variables of cultural determination and sensation seeking behaviour.

The sample for this study comprised of 100 students (50 females and 50 males) randomly selected from Annamalai University, Chidambaram Taluk in Cuddalore District, Tamil Nadu. The age range of the sample were between 18 to 24 years (Mean Age= 22.1 years).

Tools used

The research tools used in this study for data collected were the (1) e-culture inventory, (2) Brief sensation seeking behaviour scale, and (3) cultural determination scale, selected after a comprehensive review of related literature.

(1) E-culture inventory

This inventory was developed by Patel and Rajendran (2005) to measure e-culture. The inventory consists of 42 items with 2 responses, i.e., “yes” and “no” respectively for each item. The 42 items are classified into 4 areas, namely, home=16 items, office=11 items, personal=8 items and public=7 items. The score for ‘yes’ in home area is 2, in office is 1, in personal area is 3 and in public area is 1 were as the score for ‘no’ in all the areas is 0. The maximum score possible in this inventory is 74 and the minimum score is 0. High score indicates high e-culture and low score indicates low e-culture. The reliability and validity co-efficient for this inventory were found to be highly significant at 0.001 levels.

(2)Sensation seeking behaviour scale

This brief measure of the sensation seeking scale traces its origin to the sensation seeking scale (SSS Form V) developed by Zuckerman (1978). The aim of this scale is to assess the sensation seeking level, which is defined both as a personality trait as well as a need. This scale consists of 13 items; each item has two statements ‘A’ and ‘B’ pertaining to activities indicating low and high sensation seeking. The respondents are expected to choose one of the two statements which suits them more by circling either “A’ or “B”. This scale is a self-report and unidimensional. The responses of this scale are grouped into 2 categories. One category comprises of 8 items: 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, 8, 11 and 12, the responses of ‘A’ for these items is given a score of 1 and the ‘B’ responses are given of 0 scores. The other category comprises of 5 items: 4, 6, 9, and 13, the ‘B’ responses are given a score of 1 and the responses ‘A’ are given 0 scores. The maximum possible score that can be obtained by an individual in this scale is 13 and minimum is 0. High score in this scale indicates high sensation seeking and low score indicates low sensation seeking. Zuckerman suggested the following interpretation for this scale: 1-3 very low sensation seeking scores, 4-5 low sensation seeking scores, 6-9 average sensation seeking scores, 10-11 high sensation seeking scores and 12-13 very high sensation seeking scores.

(3) Cultural determination scale

This scale was developed and standardized by Chauhan (1985). The purpose of this scale is to assess cultural determination. This scale indicates conformity and rebellion towards culture in India. The revised version of this scale used for this investigation has 40 items pertaining to Indian culture with 7 responses each (7 point scaling technique), namely, ‘fully,’ ‘too much,’ ‘much,’ ‘average,’ ‘less,’ ‘very less,’ and ‘not at all.’ It is a unidimensional measure high score indicates cultural conformity and low score indicates cultural rebellion. The reliability and validity co-efficient values yielded for this scale were significant. The constructor of this scale has determined the reliability co-efficient by the test-retest method which was 0.74 and the validity co-efficient was determined with ratings of neighbours knowing the elements intimately which was 0.63. This scale consists of 40 statements; this is a 7 point scale. Each statement is followed by 7 responses, namely, ‘fully,’ ‘too much,’ ‘much,’ ‘average,’ ‘less’, ‘very less’ and ‘not at all’. The response category carries a weight age of 7 to 1scores from ‘fully’ to ‘not at all’. The maximum score an individual can obtain in this scale is 280 and the minimum score possible is 40. High score in this scale indicates cultural conformity and low score indicates cultural rebellion.

Procedure

The samples of this study were personally and individually contacted by the researcher and data was obtained through face-to face interview. The duration of data collection were spread over a period of one month (30 days). The obtained responses were scored and statistically analyzed.

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

The objective of this research study is to explore the relationship of e-culture with cultural determination and sensation seeking behaviour. For this purpose Pearson’s product moment correlation were calculated, since no significant gender differences were found results for both sexes are combined and given in Table 1.

It is inferred from the results summarized in Table 1 that e-culture does not have any significant relationship with cultural determination but is positively and significantly related to sensation seeking behaviour.

The concept of cultural determination assumes that culture determines behaviour. The outcome of this research appear contrary to this assumption, the findings indicate that e-culture is not influenced by culture, culture conformity and culture rebellious behaviour are not related to the use of electronic products. E-culture appears as a Tran cultural phenomenon, it seems to influence people irrespective of their cultural background.

Table 1: Showing the Pearson’s moment correlation co-efficient for e-culture with cultural determination and sensation seeking behaviour.

Variables r

Cultural determination 0.034

Sensation seeking behaviour 0.154**

** significant at 0.001 levels

*significant at 0.005 levels

This study reveals a positive and significant relationship between e-culture and sensation seeking behaviour. The finding of this research indicate that high sensation seeking behaviour is related with high e-culture and low sensation seeking behaviour is related to low e-culture. High sensation seekers exhibit preference for high arousal, and physical pleasure and posses an urge for novel experiences (Oishi et al, 2001), since e-culture is highly interactive and is creative in presenting the traditional culture in new digital forms providing people with plethora of novel stimulation and infinite source of information, high sensation seekers tend to be more receptive to it.

CONCLUSION

The present study reveals that cultural determination is not related to e-culture but sensation seeking behaviour is positively and significantly related to e-culture.

Our Society and Culture

culture and society
ty and Culture – George Joseph

It is almost common that every newspaper reports, several cities across the country were put on high alert after a string of blasts rocked in some prominent places. Security was tightened in malls, bus and train stations, other public places and vital installations.

In the first week of July 2008, I and my wife had to visit Indore in Madhya Pradesh for the first time for an urgent assignment. We reached around 11 pm and find that the whole city of Indore was under curfew and we were not allowed to go out of the railway station. All the stranded passengers were occupied every nook and corner of the station. Security has been beefed up all over.

Since the assignment was very urgent and we need to return the next day we had tried our level best and reached our destination the next day by noon with utter difficulties. By evening the situation became worst there were practically no chance to return to the railway station which is about 10 kms. Any how we decided to walk to the station with the aim to reach there in next 2 hours.

On the way we met Mr. Paramjeet Singh Chhabra and his family, a business man dealing in imported woods. In spite of all odds he took us to his house, phoned up his colleges to find out the way to reach the station. Finally they took us to a meter gauge station away from the police interruptions and from there we boarded a train to the main station. Practically we were moved by the hospitality of his family members.

“Cast out Caste and look at the light within” said Guru Nanak. Mr. Paramjeet Singh Chhabra and his family members are a source of inspiration. Whenever I think of him, I remember the proverb “what we sow so we reap”. The character and deeds of parents are transformed to the children. No religion teaches violence. Violence crept into the community by way of lust and greed. Politicians in our country in order to save their vote banks used religion and community to their favour. These politicians are least bothered about the development of our nation. Whenever there emerge something of national importance, instead of staying together they drift apart at their own convenience, whether it is the emerging terrorism or giving our police force enough authority and the required weapons to counter such situations without any political interference.

Knowing about God is different than knowing God.  With our minds we can know some ideas of what God is like. Learning from Scripture we can know the revealed truths of the divine attributes. Looking at God we can know much about the nature and character. Observing nature we can see the handiwork of the Creator. But all these things by themselves don’t add upto knowing God. You can no more know God by gathering information. You can find out a lot about someone, but you can only say you know them when you have met.  You can only say you know someone well after you have spent time together in intimate conversation and camaraderie.  Many people are not interested to know even about their neighbours. In a society we must know each other and involve ourselves in the well being of our fellow beings.

There are many Paramjeet Singhs ready to help people in need.  We have learnt a lot from them and determined to help others the way we can.
